In front of a capacity crowd at Wall Stadium Speedway “Big Money” Matt Hirschman wanted to go back-to-back in the tour-type modified 150-lap Turkey Derby event. He won in 2012, and now in 2013 he was starting on the outside of the front row. Though Hirschman put down the fastest lap in time-trials, he didn’t go to the lead immediately like many people expected.
Fourteen Riverhead Raceway regulars in the INEX Legends division made the trek to the Jersey Shore to try to win Turkey Derby XL. But of course they weren’t the only ones as a total of 40 drivers attempted to qualify for 28 starting spots.
Judging by the packed pit area for Saturday’s final practice session and the brisk tire business leading up to the event, the 40th running of the Turkey Derby this Friday, Saturday and Sunday (Nov. 29, 30 and Dec. 1) at Wall Stadium Speedway looks like an all-star race for open wheel Modified stock cars.
Auto racing fans will have the opportunity to see many of the cars and stars who will be competing in the 40th annual Turkey Derby when Wall Stadium opens the grandstand gates free of charge this Saturday (Nov. 23). The six hour practice session, which promises to showcase the majority of the entries for the season ending classic, starts at 10:00 a.m. and runs until 4:00 p.m. Pit area gates will open at 8:30 a.m. In the event of wet weather, Sunday will serve as a rain date with the same times in effect.
Legendary northeast racecar driver Frankie Schneider reached many milestones during his career. Although accomplished on both asphalt and dirt racing surfaces, one of his accomplishments that is more than noteworthy is the fact that he won the first ever race held on Wall Stadium’s high banks when the speedway first opened on May 26, 1950. On Saturday, November 30, during the second day of the 40th annual Turkey Derby, Schneider will be honored as the event’s Grand Marshall.
Auto racers planning to compete in Thanksgiving weekend’s 40th annual Turkey Derby at Wall Stadium will have the opportunity to come to the speedway and purchase tires for the event this Saturday (Nov. 16) From 10:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. There will be a limit of eight tires per car.
Being that the World Series of Speedway Racing at Thompson International Speedway features two exciting days for feature racing, we figured that we would do two installments of 10 to Go. Two weeks ago we featured a driver from the Valenti Modified Racing Series named Dave Schneider. This week features the 2011 Riverhead Raceway track champion in the NASCAR modified division, and current NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour driver, Justin Bonsignore.
Professional auto racers preparing for the 40th running of the annual Turkey Derby stock car classic will have one six hour practice session available to them on Saturday, November 23. On that day pit area gates will open at 8:30 a.m. and practice will begin at 10:00 a.m.
Long Island Jam is not taking it easy even though the Riverhead Raceway season is over. We ventured up to the World Series of Speedway Racing at the Thompson International Speedway in Connecticut this past weekend. We did 10 to Go with a Long Island driver by the name of Dave Schneider. Schneider is a 21-year-old driver on the Valenti Modified Racing Series tour from Northport.
